[knitting] mint 薄荷

Pattern: Old Town by Carol Sunday
用針 Needle: JIS #2、4、5 (2.75, 3.25, and 3.5mm
期間 Time: 2013.08.11 - 2013.08.30

At the first sight, I think it is just a normal top-down cardigan.  Actually it's not, the conformation is different!  Learning knitting and crocheting for more than 5 years, sometimes I feel bored about it, so I am trying new things recently❤  Not only the construction, also the sleeve knitting way is different.  For this reason, the knitting pattern is more expensive (I think, but it is worth!), about NT 215.  I made up my mind after considering nearly one month to purchase it.

Let's talk about the yarn.  I was almost melt after I see this yarn from Jii Store.  Being in angry mode for several weeks, I NEED to relax by buying yarn!  So I order it without waiting for my friends' reply ;-)  This time, I bought three different color: grey, blue-green, and silver.  5 skeins per color (I am still rational, right?)

The yarn is a little frizzy(?) originally, not because of rubbing, and you can find in from the photo in Jii Store.  However, it's a beautiful yarn with shine and soft touch.  It is suitable for cardigans.  Even that the shine will gone when it is wet, it will be back after it is dry.

It is wet, and the shine is all disappeared.

The first problem I encountered is the size.  The author used 3.75 mm needle (about JIS #5~#6), but this yarn is suitable for me in JIS #3~#4, it's much smaller than the original...  Fortunately, the stitches I need is close with #44, so what I just have to count is the amount of rows.   The second problem is pick-up.  You have to pick up from the left front, right front, and back.  If you don't calculate in advance, you will keep ripping.

The way I knit the sleeves is similar with "set-in sleeve."  You can find the original set-in sleeve here in English.  It's a top-down way to work out the sleeve by add stitches.  In "old town" pattern, the upper side of cardigan is knitted in horizontal, so I made it in short-row way.   I am really satisfied with it.  But please take care of that:  If the yarn you use have different gauges after washing, please calculate the stitches and rows in advance.

The author's short-row is really similar with Japanese style except that Japanese way do "slip" on one stitch before turning the work, and the author do "knit" instead.  That will make the stitch tighter.  I made a try and found that is't not suitable for me.  So I reknit it in Japanese way.

Upper  one is made according to Carol's instruction;
lower is made according to Japanese short-row.
Do you think there is any difference?

One advantage of top-down work is that it is very easy to control the yarn.  After knitting the sleeve underarm, I started the sleeves first.  When I finish the sleeves, I went back to knit the endless body.

I am happy that I ran out of this yarn, but the length seems too short.....
